Biography
Biog. Sketch (Full): William E. Koch was a professor of English and folklore at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Riley County. He was the president of the Kansas Folklore Society, performed folk songs before clubs and college groups, and published several articles on central plains life and folklore. He is the editor of Folklore from Kansas: customs, beliefs, and superstitions, published in 1980.
Scope and Content
Scope and content: The William Koch collection contains publications, clippings, research reports, audiotapes, and correspondence documenting Koch's interest in Kansas folklore and history. The records are organized by topic and include music, barns, architecture, specifics on various small Kansas towns, poetry, furniture, crafts, the Salter House Museum, protest songs, folk festivals, the folklore of various American Indian tribes, clippings on American Indian life and issues, interpreting proverbs, desk top graffiti, student customs, farmer's almanacs, courtship and marriage, and newsletters from the Kansas Folklore Society. The majority of the reports were created by Koch's students during his tenure as a professor of English and folklore at Kansas State University.
