Summary: Early map of the Indian lands, west of the Mississippi River, setting forth the location of the major western U.S. Army forts on the American frontier. Map was drawn to illustrate a bill to authorize the President to occupy the Oregon Territory. Includes topographic features. The area covered extends from the Mississippi River to the Rockies and Fort Snelling in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Most forts are 150 or more miles west of the Mississippi. Fort Snelling is the northernmost; Ft. Jackson, the southernmost. Shows the lands of the Omaha, Pawnee, Shawnee, Delaware, Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw, and other Native American tribes west of Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. A few roads are shown. "Taken from Tanner's large map of the U.S. published in 1837."
