Scope and Content

Scope and content: A letter from Butler County Attorney E. N. Smith informs Kansas Governor St. John of a murder that happened in their county by two men, Jack and Phil Pearson, and that one of the men have escaped. In the letter from E. N. Smith, he provides the Governor with a short description of Jack Pearson and asks for a reward to be offered for the capture of Pearson. A separate letter from the Sheriff of Butler County asks Governor St. John to offer a reward of $500 for the capture of Phil Pearson, the brother of Jack Pearson, as he assisted in the murder that occurred on June 18, 1880.
