Scope and content: These letters, spanning 1885 to 1888, are from the State Board of Health regarding its affairs to Kansas Governor John Martin. The letters discuss various topics including the board members' salaries, board requirements and amendments, the Sanitary Convention, the appointment of new board members, and the National Pure Food Movement. The Kansas State Board of Health was created in 1885. It consisted of nine physicians, each a graduate of a medical college who had at least seven years of continuous practice in his or her profession. The physicians were appointed by the governor from all parts of the state for three-year terms.
