Scope and Content

Scope and content: These letters are from various individuals in charitable institutions to Kansas Governor John Martin. The Kansas Insane Asylum discusses Native American patients among others. The rest of the letters discuss admittance into institutions including the Soldier's Orphan Home and Reform School. In 1887, the Soldier's Orphan's Home in Atchison, Kansas opened for children of Union soldiers and sailors. In 1889, regulations were altered to admit all "dependent, neglected or abused children" between the ages of two and 14.
