Scope and content: This letter dated August 19, 1886 is from the District Court of Butler County, Kansas regarding the office of coroner to Kansas Governor John Martin. The letter included a signed petition for the appointment of John W. Long as coroner of Butler County. Long succeeded J. S. Dutton who passed away causing a vacancy. Butler County was organized on February 11, 1859 and named for Andrew Pickens Butler, Senator from South Carolina.
