Scope and content: These letters, spanning 1885 to 1889, are from the residents and offices of Cloud County, Kansas regarding county affairs to Kansas Governor John Martin. Many letters discuss the unexpected death of the current sheriff, John D. Wilson, and filling the vacancy. Daniel C. Wilson, the under sheriff of John D. Wilson, is the only candidate and has multiple recommendations as well as signed petitions for his appointment. Other letters discuss the vacancy of the county coroner due to the resignation of E. Howel, which is included among the letters. S. C. Pigman is recommended for the appointment and includes his application. Cloud County was organized on September 6, 1866 and named in honor of Colonel William F. Cloud, a Civil War hero.
