Scope and content: These letters, spanning 1886, are from the residents and offices of Morton County, Kansas regarding its organization to Kansas Governor John Martin. Many of the letters are signed petitions confirming the population requirements and requesting a temporary county seat. Other letters request the appointment of census taker, coroner, sheriff, commissioners, and clerk. The Governor's Proclamation confirming the organization of the county is included. Morton County was organized on November 17,1886 and named for Indiana Governor, and later U. S. Senator, Oliver P. Morton.
