Scope and Content

Scope and content: This letter, dated February 19, 1886, is from the Shawnee County, Kansas surveyor regarding his resignation to Kansas Governor John Martin. Robert Giles, county surveyor, wrote his resignation explaining that he has taken a position with the Union Pacific Railway and the county commissioners have accepted his resignation. Shawnee County was one of the original 33 created by the Territorial Legislature, but the organization of October 10, 1855, was declared not official, and the county was officially reorganized in 1858. The county was named after the Shawnee Indians.
