Scope and content: These letters, spanning 1885 to 1887, are from the residents and offices of Smith County, Kansas regarding county affairs to Kansas Governor John Martin. Smith County was organized on February 1, 1872 and named for Major James Nelson Smith, a Union officer killed at the Battle of Blue River near Kansas City on March 21, 1864.
