Abstract: Reports showing employment of "Wild Bill" (James Butler) Hickok as wagon-master, scout, and guide. The reports are from Fort Hays (Kan.), Fort Dodge (Kan.), Fort Union (N.M.), in the field, and others. Each entry documents individuals, goods, and services hired by quartermaster officers at military posts and in the field. They include the name of the post or command, the name of the hiring officer, the running number, names of persons & articles, designation & occupation, service during the month (from, to, and days), rate of hire or compensation (dollars and cents per day, month, or year), date of contract or agreement or entry into service, by whom owned, amount of rent or pay in the month (dollars and cents), remarks, and the amount due or remaining unpaid (from, to, dollars, and cents). The source series also contains Reports of persons and articles transferred (form 53) and Reports of deceased and discharged men and deserters (form 8).
