Civil War (1861-1865)

Would new western states be slave or free? That fundamental question fueled the passions that brought the North and South to war in 1861.

The war escalated production and showed the power of America's industrial machine. This required resources, among them land, ore, cattle, and wheat. The government ordered massive surveys of the West to identify and catalog its resources.

Beyond Lewis and Clark is an online exhibit developed by the Kansas Museum of History. It is the result of a partnership between the Kansas Historical Society, the Virginia and Washington State historical societies, the U. S. Army's Frontier Army Museum at Leavenworth, and the U. S. Army Center of Military History.
