Daniel Hugh Forbes

Daniel H. Forbes was born June 6, 1920, in Carbondale, Kansas, the only child of Daniel H. and Hattie Forbes. He attended North High School in Wichita, and attended Wichita State University and Kansas State University.
Forbes joined the U.S. Army on June 5, 1941, as an aviation cadet. He became a pioneer in strategic photo reconnaissance. He flew B-17, B-24, and other aircraft, flying combat missions from bases in North Africa and India. He flew a B-29 in reconnaissance missions in the Pacific theater, and through the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb tests.
He married Hazel Moag from Defiance, Ohio, March 11, 1948. Forbes and four other crew members were killed June 5, 1948, in a Northrop Flying Wing near Muroc Air Force Base, Kern, California. Forbes Air Force Base at Topeka, Kansas, was named in his honor July 13, 1949. Major Forbes is buried at Overbrook, Kansas.
