Elaine Hassler
Elaine (Rohrer) Hassler was born April 17, 1921, in Abilene to Milton and Eva (Lay) Rohrer. She attended Chapman schools and graduated from Kansas State University with bachelor’s degrees in pre-medicine and education.
She married Kenneth Hassler on December 24, 1943, in Tampa, Florida. They had five children. They lived and farmed in the Navarre area. She taught science for 21 years in Wisconsin, Florida, Arizona, and Kansas. She served in the Kansas Legislature, on Chapman school board, and was the first female commissioner in Dickinson County.
Hassler was involved in numerous organizations including the New Basel United Church of Christ, National Education Association, American Association of University Women, Kansas Agriculture Women, Kansas Retired Teachers Association, Kansas Corral of Westerners, Hospice of Dickinson County, and the End of the Trail Quilt Guild.
She served on the Kansas Historical Foundation Board of Directors, executive committee, and served as president in 1995-1996.
She died May 16, 2009, in Salina.
