James Charles Slattery

Politician. Democrat. Born: August 4, 1948, Good Intent, Kansas. Served in U.S. House of Representatives, 2nd District: January 3, 1983, to January 3, 1995.

James Charles SlatteryJim Slattery was born in Good Intent, Atchison County, Kansas, on August 4, 1948, and attended Atchison's public schools. After high school he attended the Netherlands School of International Business and Economics (1969) and then received a B.S. (1970) and a J.D. (1974) from Washburn University (and Washburn University Law School). He worked in real estate and was admitted to the Kansas bar in 1975, subsequently practicing in Topeka. He was a member of the Kansas House of Representatives from 1973-1979 and was elected to the Ninety-eighth Congress in 1982 (served, January 3, 1983-January 3, 1995). Reelected five times, Slattery chose not to seek reelection in 1994 but instead returned to Kansas and won his party's gubernatorial nomination. Slattery lost the general election contest to the Republican candidate, Bill Graves.
