Biography

Hoose was obviously a promoter of the political campaign of Alfred M. Landon for president in 1936. He was also a vice-president of the Norris Grain Company of Kansas City, Missouri, and associated with the Board of Trade in that city.

Detailed Description of the Collection

This collection consists of 7 file folders.

Folder 1: Correspondence 1929, 1933, 1934, 1935 (May – October)

This folder contains numerous letters of reply to correspondence sent by Hoose to various business and political acquaintances across America asking them if they could support Alf Landon for president in 1936.

Folder 2: Correspondence Nov. 1 – Dec. 19, 1935

This folder contains additional letters as above (Folder 1).

Folder 3: Correspondence Jan. 23 – Apr. 30, 1936

This folder contains replies to a mailing by Hoose of a book entitled Pay Day which he sent to many business executives and politicians. It also includes carbons of some of Hoose’s letters to others, promoting the campaign of Alf Landon.

Folder 4: Correspondence May 5 – June 30, 1936

More correspondence from respondents to Hoose’s campaign for Gov. Landon for president; includes carbons of letters he sent and replies.

Folder 5: Correspondence July 6 – Oct. 31, 1936

This folder contains correspondence between Hoose and various Republican leaders regarding the campaign for Landon in 1936. It also includes copies of speeches Hoose gave on behalf of Landon; clippings regarding the campaign from contemporary newspapers and magazines; and financial reports from various fund-raising efforts.

Folder 6: Undated correspondence

This folder contains letters written to party members in Louisiana on behalf of Landon; a list of names and addresses of certain Kansas City businessmen; copy of a speech by James F. Bell entitled “The Public Attitude Toward Agriculture”; copy of a speech given to residents of Morgan County, Mo., by Hoose; copies of a report on the Louisiana Delegation; and a list of prospective Nebraska delegates considered “friendly.”

Folder 7: Undated newspaper clippings

This folder contains a collection of clippings from various newspapers regarding the election of Roosevelt and subsequent political events (most undated); clippings from magazines and pamphlets opposing the New Deal policies; and 4 copies of “A Nation-Wide Petition Through Which American Wage and Fee Earners, etc.,” a pamphlet urging Americans to speak collectively to Congress regarding “legislative and administrative wrongs and abuses.”
