John Denny

John Denny

Buffalo soldier, Medal of Honor winner.  1846-1901

John Denny was born in 1846 at Big Flats, New York. He enlisted in the United States Army from Elmira, New York. He served as a Buffalo Soldier in Company C of the 9th Cavalry Regiment, headquartered at Fort Hays. By 1879 Denny was a sergeant and particated in the Las Animas Canyon, New Mexico, engagement on September 18, 1879. There he moved an injured comrade to safety while under intense fire. Two years later he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his personal courage, loyalty, and dedication to duty. Denny died November 26, 1901 and his buried at the United States Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
