Ripley Internship Fund
John Ripley was a Topeka businessman well known not only for the prosperous laundry business, but also for his interest in and knowledge of local history. Named in his honor, the John Ripley Internship is a full-time position (40 hours per week) for eight weeks during the summer. Interns will receive a $2,500 stipend.
Qualifications
Undergraduate and graduate students must be currently enrolled and meet at least one of the following requirements are eligible:
- The student is enrolled at Washburn University
- The student graduated from a high school in Shawnee County, Kansas
- The student is a resident of Shawnee County, Kansas
Students must be majoring in history, anthropology, communications, marketing, graphic design, American studies, museum studies, folk arts, or a related program.
Immediate family members of the staff of the Kansas Historical Society and the Kansas Historical Foundation are not eligible for this program.
How to apply
Students must submit these materials:
- Ripley internship application form (PDF)
- Transcript (unofficial copy is acceptable)
- Letter of recommendation (from course instructor, or if not taking the internship for credit, from academic advisor). The letter should include a description of any course requirements for the internship and a discussion of the evaluation process for the course.
- Cover letter describing your career goals and how this internship would further those.

Completed application materials must be received by April 15. All candidates will be notified in writing whether they have or have not received an internship.
