Kansas Association of Commerce and Industry Records
1927-1987
Ms. Collection 242
Historical Sketch
Representatives from about forty Kansas local chambers of commerce met in Hutchinson in 1924 and decided a statewide organization was needed to promote a state system of highways. At that time, they formed the Kansas Association of Chambers of Commerce. The following year, the organization renamed itself the Kansas Chamber of Commerce, inaugurated a new constitution, and expanded its focus to also include the development of agriculture, waterways, and natural resources; advertisement of Kansas and its resources; and assistance to member organizations.
In 1927 the organization's headquarters moved from donated space in Kansas City to office space in Topeka to better monitor and meet with members of the Legislature. In 1930, the Chamber established a number of committees to further its work: agriculture; industry; tourist travel; advertising and publicity; research and conservation; forestation and recreation; and education. The group changed its name to the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce in 1938; it took the name Kansas Association of Commerce and Industry in 1972.
In 1987, after the last date of these records, the organization changed its name to the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Industry; its present name, once more the Kansas Chamber of Commerce, was adopted in 2004.
Fundamentally, the purpose and objective of the organization is to promote and attract business and industry in Kansas, to limit government internvention in private enterprise and to educate businessmen in economic and business practices. Many of the records in this collection refer to the organization's role as a lobbyist at the state and federal level and show how unified Kansas businesses can be a strong force in politics. Other records in this collection are concerned with democracy, communism, social welfare programs, education, and advertising.
Scope and Contents Note
The records are divided first into three series reflecting the group under each of its three names. Following that, the records for the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce and Industry are further subdivided into subseries (the series for the Kansas Chamber of Commerce is too small to be divided). These subseries consist of records of the boards of directors, councils and committees, publications and published newsletters, and subject files. The Kansas State Chamber of Commerce also has a rather small subseries for office administration. The subseries are further subdivided as necessary.
In the subject files subseries for the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce, many of the documents are speeches concerning various topics.

The user is cautioned that the publication of the contents of this manuscript collection may be construed as constituting a violation of literary property rights. These rights are derived from the principle of common law, affirmed in the 1976 copyright act, that the writer of an unpublished letter or other manuscript has the sole right to publish the contents thereof for the duration of the copyright. Unless he or she affirmatively parts with that right, the right descends to his or her legal heirs regardless of the ownership of the physical manuscript itself. It is the responsibility of the author or his or her publisher to secure permission of the owner of literary property rights in unpublished writing.
