Kansas State Capitol - Online tour - Flags
The flags in the rotunda represent the nations or states that at one time or another have claimed all or portions of what would become the state of Kansas. They are the flags of the United Kingdom (1497-1763), the French Monarchy (1682-1762), the French Republic (1800-1803), Mexico (1821-1836), Spain (1492-1821), Republic of Texas (1836-1850), and the United States (beginning with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803). This U.S. flag has 15 stars and 15 stripes. Altogether, the flags of eight nations have flown over the area now known as the state of Kansas.
