Kansas governors are elected to a four-year term. The Kansas Constitution allows governors to serve two consecutive terms.
The main door to the governor’s office leads to the public and ceremonial offices. This office is where the governor holds public signings like proclamations. The ceremonial office is decorated with elaborately carved white oak trim. The fireplace, used for heat before the installation of central heating, is one of 11 located on the second floor. Items on display in the ceremonial office are chosen by the sitting governor.
The working office of the governor, which is not on the public tour, features an allegorical painting of Justice from the early 1900s called Spirit of Kansas by George Melville Stone.
