Kansas State Capitol - Online tour - Marble
Part of the grandeur of the Capitol is created by the elaborate marble wainscoting and carvings throughout the building. The most colorful marble is located on the second floor. The north wing, south wing, and rotunda have panels of Rose St. Xavier and Rose deBrignoles marble inserted in the wainscoting. The base and capstones are dark red marble from Belgium. The black and white marble throughout the building is from Georgia, and the brown-colored marble is from Tennessee. Italy and Mexico also contributed marble for the Capitol.
In 1885 the newly installed marble in the Senate chamber cost $141,000. Marble was shipped to Topeka via the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway.
