Read Kansas! Middle School - M-24 Mexican Migration to Kansas

This lesson focuses on the contributions of Mexican immigrant labor on two important industries in Kansas (railroad and agriculture) at the turn of the 20th century.  Students will read a brief history on the topic and a reminiscence of an immigrant's experience.  Students will study the costs and benefits to the businesses and the immigrants using a "Foldable" two tab concept map.  This lesson is designed to be completed in one class period. Kansas History, Government and Social Studies Standards:

Standard #1 Choices have consequences.

  • 1.2: The student will analyze the context under which choices are made and draw conclusions about the motivations and goals of the decision-makers.
  • 1.3:  The student will investigate examples of causes and consequences of particular choices and connect those choices with contemporary issues. (possible extension)

Kansas College and Career Ready Standards:

  • RH.6-8.1: The student cites several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources
  • W.7.2 (a-f): The student will write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
  • SL.7.1 (a-d): The student will engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
