The Kansas Historical Society touches the state in many different ways—through collections, sites, and ongoing programs. This issue of Reflections, a member benefit of the Kansas Historical Foundation, explores Cloud and Republic counties in Kansas.
The Kitkahaki Pawnee settled along the Republican River in the late 18th century when their lands to the north became overcrowded. Numerous groups from Scandinavia and other areas in Europe moved to the region in the late 19th century to take advantage of the fertile farmlands. They found other resources as well, including a vein of coal that helped to power the area for many years. These groups contributed to the rich history of this portion of north central Kansas.
