- U.S. census is available every 10 years (1790, 1800 - 1940)
- Kansas census is available every 10 years (1855 - 1925)
Consult an index
- See a list of census taken in Kansas: kshs.org/10959
- Ancestry.com
- Familysearch.org
- 1940census.archives.gov
and...
- If necessary, try variant spellings, middle names, initials, nicknames, neighbors, alternate locations: Smith, Smyth, Schmidt.
- Use a census form to document age, gender, marital status, occupation, others in household, neighbors, etc.
- Search in order from latest to earliest census throughout a person's lifetime.
