World War I Manuscripts Resources

This finding aid lists manuscript materials regarding World War I that are useful for genealogical research. At the end of each entry is the collection number or name or microfilm roll number. Some manuscript material has been microfilmed. Most microfilm circulates through interlibrary loan, however, original documents do not. Please refer to the correspondence policy for information on how to request copies of original documents.

Goodrich, Eliza, b. 1860. Correspondence and miscellaneous papers. 1898-1947. 6 ft. (14 boxes). Included in the collection are rosters of companies A and E, 1st Kansas Infantry; Company B, Kansas Engineer battalion; Company C, Kansas Engineers; 1st Kansas Ambulance Company; and Ambulance Company Number 2, Kansas National Guard, all units that became part of the 137th Infantry Brigade, 35th Division, in World War I. Kansas Welcome Association. Records. 1919. 0.8 ft. (2 boxes). Association organized to welcome and entertain returning Kansas men in service landing in New York City, organized by Kansans living there. Collection includes a card file of hospital addresses of sick and wounded Kansas soldiers disembarked at New York, 1919, and visitor registers, April-September 1919. Open. No finding aids. Military history. Collection. 1840-[1973]. 12 ft. (18 boxes). Artificial collection relating to the military in Kansas and the Great Plains. Included are muster and other enrollments, abstracts of payments and equipage, accounts, fiscal returns, officers' reports, receipts, passes, personal papers of soldiers, diaries, registers of casualties, courts-martial proceedings, and personnel cards. The collection also contains records of the Paymaster's department, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; captured Confederate Army hospital records and muster rolls; muster rolls and other records of Afro-American Civil War units raised in Missouri; a list of survivors of the 18th and 19th Kansas Cavalry regiments; and records of Camp Funston, Kansas. Military organizations represented include the 1st Dragoons; 6th U.S. Infantry; Army of the Potomac, 2nd division, 2nd corps; Army of the Southwest; District of South Kansas; 1st Cherokee regiment; 2nd Colorado Infantry; 20th Indiana Infantry; Kansas anti-slavery irregular companies; Kansas volunteer and militia companies; Kansas Indian Home guards; Kansas Colored units; 37th Massachusetts Infantry; 1st Nebraska Infantry; 10th Wisconsin Infantry; 7th U.S. Cavalry; 35th & 89th Infantry divisions, XX Artillery corps, and 195th Field Artillery group. Military Sisterhood of the World War. Records. 1917-1924.0.6 ft. (2 boxes). Organization formed as the Military Sisterhood of Kansas to encourage young men to enlist and serve their country and to aid and comfort the relatives of the men entering the service. Included are materials related to the U.S. Army 130th Field Artillery band and the 130th Field Artillery Band Veterans' Organization, particularly rosters and reunion attendance lists, 1940-1959; newspaper clippings, 1943-1965, some containing names of attendees; reunion programs, 1943-1971, containing rosters, photographs, current addresses, greetings from absent members, and obituaries; annual reunion rosters, 1944-1969; and correspondence between Martin G. World War I (Kansas Veterans). Collection. 1919-ca. 1923. 20 ft. (49 boxes). Letters, military documents, photographs, and other documents providing information on Kansas soldiers in World War I, primarily members of the 35th and 89th Divisions. Items solicited from each veteran or his family included letters, especially from overseas; a photograph; and a brief biography containing date and place of birth, residence, parents' names, occupation, and names of spouse and children.
